EU emissions standard

Stage V diesel generators

Stage V is the current EU emissions standard for engines used in non-road mobile machinery, including many generator applications. It is set out in Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 and defines strict limits for NOx, particulate matter (PM) and particulate number (PN).

What the Stage V emissions standard is

Stage V is defined by Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 for non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) — engines in mobile or transportable machinery not intended for road transport of people or goods. Depending on the machinery and engine category, this can include generator applications alongside construction machinery and industrial equipment.

The regulation sets strict limits for regulated exhaust pollutants, above all nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), and introduces a limit on particulate number (PN). Which limits apply depends on the engine category and rated power band.

Whether Stage V applies to a specific generator depends on the machinery category, engine power, and the rules for placing that machinery on the market — not on the fact that a generator is sold in the EU. Permanently stationary machinery is outside the NRMM scope, although local permits and emission requirements may still apply to such installations.

Stage V regulates exhaust emissions; it is not a low-carbon or sustainability certificate. And meeting Stage V does not by itself guarantee access to urban zones, tunnels or specific sites — such conditions are set by project requirements, tenders and local rules.

Where Stage V generators are typically specified

Stage V is most often a factor in mobile and transportable applications, where EU legislation or the conditions of a specific project call for it. Whether it is mandatory in your case depends on the machinery category and the applicable requirements.

Construction projects

Temporary site power, cranes, compressors and site facilities — where EU NRMM rules or the project conditions specify Stage V equipment.

Rental generators

Rental fleets supplying generators to sites and events where the customer's contract or local rules call for Stage V machines.

Mobile power units

Portable and containerised generators deployed across changing locations, where compliance with NRMM rules is part of the specification.

Urban projects

Work in cities and sensitive areas where clients or authorities set emission requirements for machinery. Access conditions are always defined by the specific project, not by Stage V alone.

Technologies used in Stage V generator engines

To meet the Stage V limits, engines combine in-engine measures with exhaust aftertreatment. Which technologies a specific engine uses depends on its category, power band and configuration — not every Stage V engine carries the same system.

DPF — diesel particulate filter

A diesel particulate filter captures particulate matter (PM) and addresses the particulate number (PN) limit introduced by Stage V.

SCR — selective catalytic reduction

Where an SCR system is fitted, it uses an AdBlue (DEF) solution to reduce NOx emissions through a catalytic reaction in the exhaust system.

Advanced combustion management

Electronic injection control optimises the combustion process to keep raw emissions low directly in the engine.

Operational considerations for Stage V generators

Stage V technology works reliably when it is operated and maintained according to the engine manufacturer's requirements. These points matter in day-to-day running.

DPF regeneration and load profile

A particulate filter regenerates depending on the load profile and operating pattern. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for load management and regeneration.

Maintenance per the manufacturer

Aftertreatment systems add maintenance items — service intervals and procedures are defined by the engine manufacturer for the specific model.

AdBlue only where fitted

AdBlue handling applies only to units with an SCR system. Use the specified fluid quality and refill procedure defined for the model.

Fuel quality

Use the diesel grade specified by the manufacturer — fuel quality directly affects aftertreatment service life.

Stage V generators in our portfolio

We supply diesel generators with engines certified for Stage V from established manufacturers. We confirm the emissions classification and Stage V suitability of the selected model and configuration for your project. For available stock units, ask us to check the required emissions documentation before ordering. We consider output, application and the emission requirements of the project.

What to mention in your inquiry

In the project description, include the Stage V requirement (tender condition, site rule or internal policy), the generator model or output you are considering, the site and its conditions, and the intended use and duty. We will confirm what is achievable for the specific model and configuration.

Czech projects — scope as agreed

For Czech projects the delivery may include, as agreed: generator supply, design of the installation, commissioning on a prepared site, turnkey realization and a service contract. The scope is always clarified together during consultation and confirmed in the quotation. English-speaking customers are welcome throughout.

International supply — EXW CZ/NL

International direct sales are preferably EXW Czech Republic / Netherlands; transport is agreed individually. Installation and service abroad are possible in agreed cases and are always confirmed individually by location and model. Manufacturer warranty.
