How to size a generator
Output and power factor
Generator output is quoted in kVA. Usable output in kW is roughly 0.8 times the kVA value at the standard power factor of 0.8 — a 100 kVA unit delivers about 80 kW.
Starting loads
Electric motors draw several times their rated current when starting. Large motors, compressors and pumps must be included in sizing — or managed with staged load connection after start.
PRP vs ESP
ESP (standby) applies to emergency operation during outages. PRP (prime) applies to continuous variable operation. The two ratings of the same unit are different and not interchangeable — the required duty is confirmed during sizing.
