Industrial power and standby
Industrial diesel generator
An industrial diesel generator provides reliable power for production, technological and operational units. We design a suitable solution based on the output, load character, operating conditions and requirements for automatic takeover.
- AKSA · Perkins, Doosan, Volvo Penta
- Outputs 20–3000 kVA
- Standby and prime duty
Overview
Why the diesel generator remains the industrial standard
A diesel generator is designed precisely for the given operation — output, execution, fuel capacity and automation depend on the specific application and operating requirements.
Without knowing the operation, the right solution cannot be designed: the backup of a manufacturing plant differs from the backup of a server room. Island operation differs from takeover during a grid failure. A precise design always starts from the concrete project.
Where it fits
Where an industrial diesel generator makes sense
Engineering and presses
Engineering, press shops, food production, chemical industry — operations where stopping the line means a direct financial loss.
Warehousing
Automated warehouses, cooling boxes, loading terminals and sorters — an outage interrupts the whole operation and dispatch.
IT and control centres
Server rooms, data centres, control stations and technology centres with a requirement for continuous power.
Multi-tenant zones
Industrial zones, multi-purpose areas, commercial and logistics parks with multiple tenants and various load types.
Legislated backup
Hospitals, emergency services, energy infrastructure and operations with a statutory obligation for standby power.
Weak-grid locations
Locations with a higher frequency of outages, industrial zones with fluctuating power quality or sites without sufficient grid capacity.
Comparison
Standby or continuous operation — why it matters
The way the generator is used is one of the key inputs of the design. Standby and continuous operation place different demands on the machine — in sizing, configuration and the service plan.
Standby (ESP-type duty)
- The generator serves as backup during distribution-grid outages.
- Starts automatically, transfers the supply and returns to standby after the outage ends.
- Sized for intermittent operation — usually with lower operating load and longer service intervals.
Prime (PRP-type duty)
- The generator serves as the primary or regular power source — where there is no grid connection, when connection capacity is limited or for controlled supply.
- Requires different sizing, shorter service intervals and higher engine durability.
- PRP and ESP ratings are not interchangeable — the required duty is confirmed per project.
Design factors
What must be considered when designing an industrial generator
Total load and reserve
Total consumption of the critical consumers, their simultaneity and the required power reserve. Determined individually according to the load character.
Load character
Resistive, motor or mixed load. Direct-on-line motors have starting currents several times higher than their steady-state draw.
Duty type
The way the generator is used significantly influences the configuration, engine sizing, service intervals and total operating costs. PRP and ESP are different duty types.
Switching and automation
The type and execution of the transfer switch, the required takeover time, circuit priorities and connection to the operation's control systems.
Fuel autonomy
The length of standby or autonomy determines the fuel tank size — from 8 hours of standard standby to multi-day continuous operation.
Acoustics
Noise requirements depend on the location and surroundings — canopied unit, exhaust silencers or an indoor installation in a machine room.
Location
Exterior, interior, machine room or canopy — the placement influences the choice of execution, foundation, exhaust routing and service access.
Service
Proximity of service support, spare-parts availability and contracted emergency service for critical applications.
System solution
It is not just a generator — it is a complete functional system
Industrial generator units
Industrial AKSA generators with Perkins, Doosan or Volvo Penta engines. Outputs 20–3000 kVA for standby and continuous operation.
Automatic transfer switch (ATS)
The transfer switch moves the supply on an outage without manual intervention. The configuration depends on the required takeover time and circuit priorities.
Switchboards and cabling
Power and control switchboards, cable interconnections, coordination with the existing electrical installation — designed and supplied as part of the whole.
Fuel storage
Integrated or separate tank sized for the required operating time. For long-term operation and multi-day standby.
Acoustic execution
Sound-attenuated canopy, container or acoustic enclosure according to the requirements of the installation site and its surroundings.
Monitoring and service
Remote access, alarms and status overview. Service contract and emergency support throughout the lifetime.
Typical operations
Canopied or open execution?
Canopied unit
An enclosed canopy with its own sound insulation and protection. Suitable for outdoor installations, commercial buildings and operations without specialised facilities.
Open unit
A structurally open unit without its own enclosure. Suitable for machine rooms and industrial halls where acoustics, ventilation and protection are addressed by the building.
High power density
Diesel generators offer high output in a relatively small footprint — suitable for industrial operations with limited space.
Fast availability
The ability to start and take over the load within seconds. With an automatic transfer switch (ATS) the changeover happens without manual intervention.
One machine, both duties
A single unit can work both as standby during grid outages and as a primary or regular source of electrical energy.
Industrial durability
Industrial units are built for outdoor and indoor operation, temperature extremes and the load peaks typical for industry. With observance of service intervals, industrial diesel generators reach lifetimes in the tens of thousands of operating hours.
